Karen Grylls

Artistic Director CANZ

Dr Karen Grylls ONZM founded Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir in 1998 and the choir has achieved great acclaim internationally in performance and recording. She is Associate Professor in Choral Conducting at the University of Auckland and is Artistic Director of the Choirs Aotearoa New Zealand Trust, the managing body for the NZ Youth Choir and Voices NZ.  Dr Grylls was Conductor and Artistic Director of the New Zealand Youth Choir from 1989 to 2011, and Artistic Director of Toronto’s Exultate Chamber Choir from 2011 to 2013.

Catrin Johnsson

Language & Vocal Coach

Catrin Johnsson, ARAM, mezzo-soprano, was born in Sweden and trained at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Catrin is a principal opera artist and a Performance Teacher in Voice and Stagecraft at the University of Auckland.

Rowan Johnston

Co-Music Director

Rowan is a freelance choral conductor and clinician who has recently relocated with his whānau from Auckland to Wellington. He has just finished as Musical Director for the Auckland Youth Choir, Director of Choirs at Holy Trinity Cathedral Auckland and Musical Director of the internationally acclaimed school choir Choralation from Westlake Girls and Boys High Schools. Rowan is also an Associate Conductor for Voices NZ Chamber Choir and a National Choral Mentor for the New Zealand Choral Federation.

Fiona Wilson

Associate Conductor

Fiona has been a member of Voices NZ Chamber Choir since 2006 and has previously sung with NZ Youth Choir, London’s BBC Symphony Chorus, V8, Auckland Chamber Choir and Dorian Choir. Fiona is the Director of Cantare, the premier girls choir at Westlake Girls High School in Auckland, where she is the Head of Music.

Louise Jakeway

Manager of NZ Youth Choir and Voices NZ

Louise has over 10 years working in Arts Management in a variety of fields. Louise joined Choirs Aotearoa NZ in January 2020 as Manager of NZYC and Voices NZ.

Morag Atchison

Morag is one New Zealand’s leading sopranos. A graduate of the University of Auckland and the Royal Academy of Music (London), Morag has sung in the UK, Europe, the USA and Africa.

Michael Stewart

Deputy Music Director

Michael Stewart is one of the country’s leading concert organists.He was appointed to the NZ Youth Choir in 2017. Michael is also Organist and Director of Music at the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul and Music Director of The Tudor Consort.

David Squire

Music Director

In 2011 David Squire was appointed Music Director of New Zealand Youth Choir. Current chair of the New Zealand Association of Choral Directors, he is also a national conducting advisor and tutor, and a governance board member of the New Zealand Choral Federation. In 2016 he led NZYC to win the Grand Prix at IFAS in the Czech Republic.
