Originally from the Philippines, Althea is currently based in Auckland. She is studying a conjoint degree in Law and Commerce (majors in Management and Economics) at the University of Auckland. Althea also plays the violin and her passion for music began while studying at Westlake Girls’ High School where she sang as part of Cantare and Choralation choirs. Her other interests include learning different cultures, the Korean language and editing for various law journals. Althea joined NZYC in 2020.
Born in Nelson but now residing in Wellington, Charle Rainey is currently in his first year studying a BA BMus conjoint degree majoring in History and Classical Performance at Te Herenga Waka, Victoria University. Prior to this, he studied at Nelson College where he was a part of the New Zealand Secondary Students Choir from 2021-2022. In his spare time, Charle enjoys playing piano and tuba, but choral singing is his passion in life! In Wellington, Charle sings with Orpheus Choir, directed by Brent Stewart, and St Paul’s Cathedral choir, directed by Michael Stewart.
Josh was born and raised in Auckland, fostering his love of singing at Rangitoto College in The Fundamentals Choir. Since then he has gone on to sing in and with community choirs such as Harbour Voices and Camerata, as well as singing in the Auckland Chamber Choir, New Zealand Youth Choir and the Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir Pool. He is currently in his final year of his Bachelors of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Auckland.
Ivan is a Law and Music student at the University of Auckland, studying Voice under Dr. Te Oti Rakena. He was part of the 2019-2020 NZSSC cycle and currently also sings with the Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir, Auckland Youth Choir, and Auckland Chamber Choir. Outside of choir, he is the 2023 President of the School of Music Student’s Association and has also represented the University in the UNSW Trans-Tasman Case Competition and the UTS Global Case Competition.
Hey, I’m Josh, I am currently a first year student studying at Victoria University of Wellington. I am working towards a Bachelor of Science with a particular interest in Marine biology and biodiversity…but we shall see where that goes in the future. I currently live in Napier and I was also born and raised here. Aside from music, my other major hobbies include tropical fish-keeping, and figurine collecting, with a particular taste for dinosaurs at the moment. One of few quirks happens to be the ability to make decent animal impressions, which is always a good laugh.
Takerei is based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and holds a BMus in Classical Performance Voice from the University of Auckland. Takerei is very active in the NZ choral scene as a singer, composer and conductor. They sing in the Auckland Youth Choir, New Zealand Youth Choir, and Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir, and regularly perform with choirs and ensembles around the country. Previously, they were a member of the New Zealand Secondary Students’ Choir’s 2017-2018 cycle.
Alongside this, Takerei is actively involved as a conductor. They have been the Peter Godfrey Conducting Scholar for the New Zealand Youth Choir, and have conducted choirs at Kristin School, St Paul’s College Ponsonby, Auckland Grammar School, and currently Takapuna Grammar School and Epsom Girls Grammar School. Their choir from Auckland Grammar School were invited to perform at the Big Sing National Finale 2022 in Christchurch, where they were awarded Silver.
In 2021, Takerei was awarded the Development Award at the University of Auckland Douglas Lilburn Trust Composition Prize for their work, Ngā Moemoea o te Ata Māhina (Dreams of Moonlight) for SSAA, Handbells and Percussion. They have enjoyed writing various commissions over the years. Their most recent work, E Kiwi E, was premiered by in April of 2024 by Orpheus Choir Wellington, joined by Wellington Brass and Hiwa Performance Creative.
Nicolas is currently pursuing a PhD in Bioengineering at the University of Canterbury. An active member of the Christchurch music scene, Nicolas is regularly involved with award-winning groups across choral, barbershop, opera, and contemporary a cappella genres. Nicolas is the current NZYC board representative to Choirs Aotearoa, the Manager of Quantum Acoustics chorus, and the treasurer of the Christchurch Youth Choir. In his free moments, Nicolas enjoys the storytelling of his regular Dungeons & Dragons game.
Te Whanganui-a-Tara based mezzo-soprano Kassandra Wang is an active solo and ensemble singer across Aotearoa. Her work and training span styles including classical, pop, jazz, and musical theatre. With a degree in electronic and jazz composition, Kassandra is a passionate advocate of new music, fresh interpretations, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Robin is a graduate of the University of Otago with a double degree in Law and Commerce. Born in New Jersey, Robin started his choral journey when he attended Palmerston North Boys’ High School and joined the OK Chorale under Graeme Young. Since then, he has sung with NZSSC, NZYC and Voices NZ. He was also a student under Judy Bellingham and Rebecca Ryan.
Robin is an aspiring arranger and has had arrangements performed both in New Zealand and internationally. In 2024, his barbershop quartet (‘Heist’) placed 6th internationally at the NextGen Varsity Contest in Cleveland, Ohio. Apart from singing, Robin enjoys film and also holds a 299th place Mario Kart world record.
Quillan is from Auckland and studies at the University of Auckland, working towards a Bachelor of Science majoring in Computer Science. Quillan attended Rangitoto College while in Auckland and was a member of the New Zealand Secondary Students Choir 2019-2020 cycle. Quillan is in his second cycle with the New Zealand Youth Choir and is a current member of the Auckland Youth Choir and the Neotectonic Vocal Ensemble, where he also sings bass, and has sung in various massed choral ensembles, including multiple with New Zealand Opera. When he’s not singing, Quillan can often be found reading or trying to fix a bug in his code.
